Yesterday, the nominations were announced for The Chip Shop Awards – an international competition, aimed at ‘fostering and recognising creativity with no boundaries and no rules’.
< Amongst the shortlist is this entry.
Regular clients of Pure Creative may have spotted the remarkable similarity between this and Pure Creative’s Christmas mail out, dating back to 2008 when the term ‘credit crunch’ really was on everyone’s lips!
Being the creative souls that we are, we are always coming up with new ways for tackling familiar problems – in this case, a Christmas card and pressie mail-out for our regular clients. So we came up with this…

We bought dozens of bags of fun-sized Crunchie bars and packaged them up, four-at-a-time, into mini ‘Hobson’s choice’ selection boxes, accompanied by a little card, all with the appropriately tweaked graphic.
At the same time, we produced a non-Christmas version which we mailed out new year 2009 as part of a more general marketing campaign.
They went down extremely well and we still see the odd one on client’s desks these days, with the chocolates long since eaten, of course.
It just goes to show there’s no such thing as an original idea. Perhaps this one was fairly obvious, but we were very pleased with how ours turned out all those years ago.
Good luck to Iris and all the others on the shortlist for the awards.
Obviously, you’ve got to be ‘in it to win it’, so look out for us next year!
Pure’s Richard Miller is involved with a community action group in South Manchester; something which brought about a fringe benefit recently, in the form of a surprise invitation to the Lord Mayor of Manchester’s Garden Party, arranged for HM The Queen’s visit to the city as part of her Diamond Jubilee tour.

The event saw a thousand community volunteers treated to an afternoon’s hospitality and entertainment in Manchester Central (formerly Gmex) which had been converted into a massive indoor garden, with ‘lawns’, moving statues, flowerpot-men and a bandstand featuring a range of orchestras, bands and choirs.
Guests of honour, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh walked about and chatted before settling down to a display of dance, cheerleading, sea-cadet drill and tai-kwondo provided by a range of schools and community groups.
Richard’s guest at the event was Maria Morrison. Maria, an OAP, was badly attacked as she waited for a bus near her home, very nearly losing her life. She is thankfully making a fast and full recovery. The incident provoked shock in the local area, but has served as a catalyst for a lot of good will and neighbourliness. Maria’s attitude to her ordeal symbolises the positive spirit to be found in the communities and neighbourhoods of the city, so the community group felt she was particularly deserving of the invitation.
Richard defied security measures and took the few surreptitious snaps of proceedings you can see above.
More photos and video of The Queen’s visit to Manchester can be found here.

Maybe it’s something to do with sharing office space with architects, but during her festive baking binge, Pure Creative’s Carolynn Greenhalgh turned her talents to the design construction of this fantastic gingerbread house, preserved for posterity in the pictures here. Yes, needless to say, it didn’t last long and was promptly demolished. Nothing to do with infringement of planning regs. It tasted even better than it looked!
We’ll be featuring more of Carolynn’s culinary creations on the blog, so be sure to come back and feast your eyes.
And happy birthday to Carolynn for Friday 13th!
